Psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis are described below. You can get a more in-depth understanding of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis under the “Resources” page.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy entails meeting one or more times a week and is based on the idea that the past influences the present. We all unconsciously engage in life in complex ways without being fully aware of why we do so. One goal of this therapy is to increase the individual's awareness of unconscious thoughts and develop new insights about feelings and behaviors. Through this therapeutic approach, individuals can experience increased satisfaction and productivity in their life.
In psychoanalysis one meets four or five times a week with a clinician trained as a psychoanalyst. This frequency facilitates an understanding of one’s self and one’s relationships. Psychoanalysis is based on the theory that individuals oftentimes are unaware of factors that determine their emotions and actions. Through the psychoanalytic process, the patient can learn to recognize how and when old patterns of behavior are triggered and thus come to deal more effectively with current, everyday life.
